Your wedding day is one of the most important, exciting and happiest days of your life. It’s also the one day that you want to look your absolute best. We do everything to prepare for it from dieting, choosing the right jewellery, having our nails done, cutting and colouring our hair, to finding the perfect hair and make up artist for our big day. However, having worked in the bridal industry for over 13 years I’ve noticed that a lot of my brides seem to forget the most important thing of all; their skincare!
Everyone wants flawless glowy skin, especially on their wedding day. It’s not only using the perfect primer, foundation and concealer powder, but also finding a skincare routine that suits them – and sticking with it! You really need to find out what skin type you are and buy the right products for you.
Finding the right balance
As a bridal make-up artist, not only is it my job to create the perfect look for you but also to find out what skin type you are so that I can make sure your make-up lasts all day. I ask every bride whether their skin is dry, normal or oily and I’d say about 50% of them know their own skin. So, to make things easier for you all I’ve put a list together of different skin types and products that I’d recommend.
Personally, I’ve always suffered with my own skin. It’s very dehydrated which means that when I wash it, it can sometimes feel tight and dry as it tries to protect itself by producing excess oils. This means that it ends up looking oily and is very spot-prone. I also have sensitive skin so I try to use natural non-perfumed products. I suffered for years with eczema and after seeing several skin specialises have managed to keep that at bay. I have a good skincare routine but definitely notice a huge difference when applying make-up if I haven’t been as strict with my skincare routine.
What skin type are you?
Oily skin
Normally, if you’ve got oily skin you already know your skin type. If you don’t treat it properly because of the build-up of oiI, it becomes shiny with enhanced pores, making it prone to acne. The most common areas tend to be your T-zone ( the area in the middle of your eyebrows and just above them).
If you suffer from oily skin, I’d recommend Effaclar Purify cleansing Gel. This cleansing gel is gentle on the skin and is specifically for people with oily-prone skin as it helps to fight against acne and blackheads. Also, you only need a small amount of this product and it’s extremely natural (water-based) and affordable. Then, for moisturising, I’d recommend Effaclar Duo (+).
Dry skin
Dry skin can be flaky and painful. It can age you by giving you dehydration lines. This is why it’s so important to moisturise. If you suffer from dry skin, I’d recommend KIEHL’S Ultra Facial Cream. Kiehl’s moisturiser is a natural moisturiser that’s perfect for providing 24-hour hydration for dry skin by balancing hydration levels. Alternatively, something a bit more affordable is this face moisturiser from The Ordinary which again, is a natural-based moisturiser.
Normal skin
This is the skin type everyone wishes they had! It’s well-balanced, meaning it’s not too dry or too oily. People with normal skin don’t normally know their skin type because they never had any skin problems and tend to not use much on their skin. I always think it’s best to try and enhance what you have.
If you have normal skin, I’d recommend REN Evercalm Overnight Recovery Balm which is a moisturising balm for the most amazing glow overnight. If you’re after a glowing look on your big day I highly recommend this product. Alternatively, I’d suggest La Roche-Posay Nutritic Intense Rich which is a rich moisturiser that’s natural and affordable. This product is rich so if you don’t like your skin to feel too oily I’d recommend just using this at night.
