A bit about Chislehurst

Chislehurst is a lovely place to work and live and I’m fortunate enough to fit into both categories! As I’m based in the area, I thought I’d share some fascinating facts about the place. The name ‘Chislehurst’ comes from two old Saxon words; cisel (gravel) and hyrst (wooded hill). Whilst I’m no expert on the subject, Bromley Council’s website appears to confirm this by suggesting that the name was first recorded around 955 and 973 AD. The page says it means ” The wooded hill where the ground is gravelly”.

It’s also had a few particularly famous residents over the years, Napoleon Bonaparte (whose first name was actually Louis-Napoleon), the famous French President. William Camden also lived here; he owned Camden Place, a stunning building that is now part of the elite Chislehurst Golf Club. Malcolm Campbell was also born in Chislehurst – He was the land and water speed record holder at one time and is now buried in St. Nicholas Parish Church next to his parents.

Perhaps Chislehurst is most famous for its caves. If you’ve never visited the caves, you really should. The caves are an astonishing 22-mile-long collection of tunnels that are interconnected and they were used for chalk and flint mining from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Many locals think that they’re naturally occurring but they are in fact entirely man-made.

During the Second World WarWorld, they were used as a humungous air-raid shelter, housing a whopping 15,000 temporary residents at one time and in the 1960s the caves transformed into a rock venue with several well-known performers including David Bowie, Status Quo, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin.
