Fascinating facts about Abbey Wood
The area now known as Abbey Wood close to the railway station was originally known as ‘The Village’; the area at the bottom of Knee Hill where it joins Harrow Manorway. Now a busy road, Knee Hill used to be an ancient, minor track that cut through the woods. It’s thought that Knee Hill could actually be one of the oldest roads in London.
‘The Village’ only consisted of around a dozen houses and two pubs – The Abbey Arms and the now-demolished Harrow Inn. Because the Harrow Inn was classed as being in Kent, it used to shut at 10.30pm but the closing time for the Harrow Inn (which was just outside the Kent border) was 11pm. This meant that every night at 10.30, the patrons of The Harrow used to migrate to The Abbey Arms to cram in an extra 30 minutes of valuable drinking time!
